Draft proposal for Intervention

All students, irrespective of their discipline, are responsible for creating what’s called an “intervention.” The idea is the intervene in some domain to create a more positive outcome, either using legal, policy, or ethical means. Below is the overview of my proposal and its background.

Reskilling creative professionals at risk of AI-related job displacement

Overview:

The intervention is designed to help creative professionals develop and augment their existing skills to avoid both intentional and unintentional job displacement caused by AI. Overhauling the entire creative industry may not be feasible, but a single advertising agency or in-house creative group may be plausible. It’s also a topic I can relate to, having been a Creative Director before transitioning into data science and AI ethics.

Background and Context

Once thought impervious to AI, the creative industry has been one of the first to be impacted. Creative professionals’ core skills are quickly being “automated away” due to generative AI. Additionally, creative professionals have the added challenge of their intellectual property (IP) being unlawfully used in training sets of generative AI models without their consent. These challenges came to light recently with the writers’ strike in Hollywood, when the writers’ guild created a new contract with guardrails in how the technology can be used in film and television projects out of fear that unchecked AI could dramatically reshape Hollywood and undermine their roles.
