Touring the New Building
The Edinburgh Futures Institute relocated to the historic Edinburgh Royal Infirmary in downtown Edinburgh. The building underwent complete renovation while preserving its heritage — a site significant to many locals who were born or lost loved ones there. The entrance features a tribute to Florence Nightingale, the pioneering nursing reformer.
This collaborative space, funded by substantial investments from both the university and Scottish government, brings together cohorts, researchers, post-docs, and companies. They share facilities dedicated to addressing global challenges.
The interior masterfully blends contemporary elements with historical character. “Steel, glass, and centuries-old stone all complement each other,” creating an environment that reflects the diversity of its occupants. The thoughtfully designed spaces include lecture halls, meeting rooms, casual gathering areas, and intimate discussion nooks. Two maker studios contain 3D printers, robotics equipment, and other sophisticated technology.
Beyond quality instruction, the physical environment itself profoundly influences the educational experience. Where learning happens genuinely matters.
